Italian Language Levels Based on the CEFR

  • Beginner (A1):
    • Description: Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details.
    • Suggested Hours: 80-100 hours of study
  • Elementary (A2):
    • Description: Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance. Can communicate in simple tasks requiring a direct exchange of information.
    • Suggested Hours: 180-200 hours of study
  • Intermediate (B1):
    • Description: Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling. Can produce simple connected texts on familiar topics.
    • Suggested Hours: 350-400 hours of study
  • Upper-Intermediate (B2):
    • Description: Can understand the main ideas of complex texts. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible. Can produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects.
    • Suggested Hours: 500-600 hours of study
  • Advanced (C1):
    • Description: Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
    • Suggested Hours: 700-800 hours of study
  • Proficient (C2):
    • Description: Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express themselves spontaneously, very fluently, and precisely.
    • Suggested Hours: 1000-1200 hours of study
